Set Computer to Boot from USB Flash Drive

When we reinstall computer or reset windows login password with USB, we have to set our computer to boot from the usb. This article will show you how to set computer to boot from USB flash drive. If you are not sure what your computer Boot Menu key is, you can refer to the boot menu keys table at the end of this article.

Note:

In different computers, the steps to set computer to boot from USB flash drive may be a little different, because the Boot Menu Keys or BIOS Entry Keys in different computers may be different.

Two methods to set computer to boot from USB flash drive:

  • 1 Press the Boot Menu Key to set computer to boot from USB flash drive
  • 2 Get into BIOS to set the USB flash drive for the first boot option

Method 1: Press the Boot Menu Key to set computer to boot from USB Flash drive

Here will take HP laptop for example:

Step1: Restart/start computer, and press the Boot Menu Key (HP laptop: F9, DELL laptop: F12) immediately and repeatedly until the boot menu screen appears.

Step2: When the boot menu set up, use Up and Down key to select the USB device.

Step3: Press Enter to save the change and boot computer from the usb.

Tips: In some computers, the boot menu key will be showed in the screen when the power is on, but some others do not show the boot menu key that need to get into the BIOS to open the BOOT MENU function. Please pay attention to that some computers do not have Boot Menu Key, in this case, we only can set computer to boot from usb with the method below.

Method 2: Get into BIOS to set the USB Flash drive for the first boot option

Here will take Phoenix computer for example:

Step1: Start/restart computer, and press the BIOS Entry Key (Del) to get into the BIOS setting

Step2: When get into the BIOS screen, select the Advanced BIOS Features, and then press F18 to save and exit.

Step3: Select the Hard Disk Boot Priority, and press Enter.

Step4: Use the +/- key to move the USB-HDD to the first option, and then save the change and exit.
